We explored the properties of sound with Mme Krawiecki's class

Learning goal:
To explore the properties of sound (both amplitude and pitch) with our musical instruments

In Mme Krawiecki's class, there was one centre where 5 students at a time could place a contact mic onto their instrument and start testing it. The contact mics were connected to a mixer, which was connected to our large class speakers. At times, it was a little loud but Mme Kohut made sure it was safe for our ears using a decibel meter App!!

Using Garage Band, students could clearly see the frequency of their vibrations. As the groups started exploring with the mixer they were asked to make up a short composition! The compositions were recorded and the recordings are much different from what was heard in the classroom because the mics only picked up on the vibrations.

Learning Goal
To use technological problem-solving skills
to design, build, and test a

sound (e.g., a musical instrument)

The students inquired on how to build a musical instrument using recycled materials. They used the netbooks in class to search the internet and watch instructional videos. The students listed their necessary materials, they brought them in class and built their musical instrument!!
